Craft Scrap first, then prioritize the Cutter and Thumper before optional equipment, because those tools unlock the materials required by most opening repairs. Inspect broken systems and discover source items to reveal additional recipes, then craft at the train or an available workstation. Keep one objective in focus so shared materials are not consumed by a lower-priority item.

How crafting unlocks work

The opening tutorial grants or exposes Scrap after you collect Metal, while other recipes appear through discoveries, quest progress, or finding a relevant material. Inspect every repair target before gathering because the game may not display its full cost until the interaction is registered. Later tools such as the Twister unlock after specific story progress.

Workstations at the train and other stations handle crafting and upgrades. A recipe visible in the interface should override any web table, especially during Early Access. This wiki records the build and verification date so changed costs can be identified instead of silently mixed together.

Craft Scrap first

Scrap costs Metal x2 and handles the phone-booth lock, frozen generator battery, common salvage, and several early interactions. Make it as soon as the opening containers provide Metal. Keep spare Metal because tool durability can force a replacement during the train repair sequence.

Do not use the first Scrap on every breakable object you see. Complete power restoration and inspect the next objective before spending durability on general gathering. Purposeful tool use keeps the early loop moving.

Build the Cutter and Thumper

The Cutter costs Aluminum x4, Plastic x2, and Metal x4. It extracts Wires from electrical panels and opens sources of Duct Tape, Cardboard, Foam, and other station salvage. Because it expands the available resource pool, it is usually the best craft after immediate survival and repair needs.

The Thumper costs Metal x4 and Plastic x2 and harvests Aluminum from suitable cratered asteroid deposits. Aluminum is needed by train systems, antennas, the interphone, tools, and equipment. Together, Cutter and Thumper turn random scavenging into targeted resource routes.

Repair the train before comfort crafting

Kettle Bobby needs Aluminum x3, Wires x2, Electronics x2, and Plastic x1. The Nutri-Pack-O-Mat needs Aluminum x3, Wires x2, Electronics x3, and Plastic x1; the lamp uses Plastic x1, Metal x2, and Glass x2. The damaged window accepts Cardboard or Foam.

These systems support food, water, light, shelter, and quest progression. Finish one complete repair at a time and store the components for the next. Crafting a convenience item is rarely worth delaying the machine that stabilizes a basic need.

Make survival consumables deliberately

The Medkit unlocks after finding Fabric and costs Alcohol x1 plus Fabric x2. Purified Oxygen unlocks after encountering Oxyworm and costs Oxyworm x2, Metal x1, and Ice x1. Alcohol, after its first discovery, costs Ice x2 and Nutriworm x1.

Carry consumables as protection against an error, not as a substitute for route planning. One emergency oxygen item can save a valuable return, but repeatedly consuming crafted oxygen on ordinary trips wastes inputs. The survival guide explains how to establish safer turnaround points.

Plan equipment crafts

The Flashlight costs Wires x2, Plastic x2, Glass x2, and Light Bulb x1. The Gas Tank costs Wires x4, Refined Metal x2, Rubber x2, and Aluminum x4. The Backpack uses Aluminum x4, Plastic x2, Titanium x4, and Electric Tape x4 after its blueprint is found near the painted corpse and locked box.

These items solve different constraints, so build the one that addresses your current route. More inventory is valuable only if oxygen and navigation can bring the larger haul home. A Gas Tank or survival upgrade may produce more practical reach than extra storage.

Budget materials across recipes

Before crafting, total the materials required by the active quest and one replacement tool. Reserve those quantities in storage, then spend the remainder. This prevents a Flashlight or optional upgrade from consuming the last Wires needed by the interphone.

Use the resource index to turn each shortage into a specific object search. Aluminum means cratered asteroid deposits and a Thumper; Plastic means pipes; Wires means panels and a Cutter. A planned route is faster than sweeping every visible wreck.

Upgrade at a workstation

Suit and equipment upgrades use workstations at the train or suitable stations. Read the benefit and recipe before committing scarce processed materials. Early upgrades should reduce the constraint that is actually blocking progression, such as survivability, reach, or inventory.

Achievement rewards can also improve the character. Reassembling the Attendant provides Physical Protection +2, while the Hacker keypad reward increases maximum health. Optional objectives therefore belong in a complete upgrade plan even when they are not traditional crafts.

Early Access recipe policy

Recipes on this site were checked on September 1, 2026 for the initial Early Access release. Costs, unlock conditions, names, and balance may change after patches. Always follow the values displayed in your current workstation.

Planned spacecraft, vehicles, planetary travel, and building will expand crafting, but this guide does not invent their recipes. They remain roadmap items until playable and verified. See Early Access roadmap for the announced scope.

Use a three-reserve crafting rule

Keep three small reserves at the train: enough Metal for replacement Scrap, the components for the next progression repair, and one emergency survival craft. Treat everything above those reserves as available for upgrades or convenience equipment. This rule prevents a useful optional item from blocking the tool needed to gather more resources.

Recalculate the reserves whenever the quest tracker advances to a new repair stage. Label the goal mentally by exact item and count rather than by a broad category such as “more materials.” Precise totals make every expedition shorter and reveal immediately when a patch has changed a recipe.
